Homemade is fun!

Over at Raising Homemakers, they posted a video on how to make homemade butter. Hubby and I were amazed it was that easy!! We are so use to convenience....it's amazing what a little work will produce :)
So the family got together (yes, it was a family affair) and we grabbed 2 cartons of Heavy Whipping cream, divided it between 3 plastic containers, put 2 marbles in each container and started shaking!!!
It was hard work as you can see from our boy's face *grin*
After about 15 mins, we had butter and delicious buttermilk. I'd say it made over 3 cups of buttermilk and over 3 cups of butter.
Our daughter used the buttermilk to make buttermilk biscuits from scratch and our son made us some cinnamon butter.
I have to say it was delicious!!!!! (and soooo much fun!)

shake, shake, shake!!!

the butter separating from the buttermilk

2 cartons produced all that!!!

from scratch buttermilk biscuits

cinnamon butter

Doesn't that look GOOD!!!!!!!

  3. We are so going to have to try that...assuming the expire for the butter would be the same of that on the carton of whipping cream???Also does it need refrigeration then as typically we keep butter in the cupboard when opened...well,enough of my questioning off you go now to enjoy those yummy looking biscuits ect...great job guys;)

  4. Butter lasts for a long time in the fridge. It wouldn't be based on the expiration date of the cream. You can also add a pinch of salt to your butter for added flavor. We're going to be making more biscuits today!!

  10. You need to shake it for awhile!! It goes through different stages. I thought ours was a flop too at one point. It was just a whipped mess inside the container. Then it got really hard to shake it BUT if you keep at it all of the sudden the whipped mess inside starts to pull away from the sides and forms butter. The last 5 mins or so is the worst. It is like you are shaking but nothing is happening, the marbles don't move or anything. You have to REALLY whip the containers back and forth....then poof! It happens. Try again!!
