Some good reads

I just realized today that if my children were in public school, I would have had 2 less children in the house today! Hard to believe my boy would have been heading off to kindergarten. Makes me so very thankful that I have the opportunity and privilege to teach them :)

I've been doing a lot of reading lately. I'm working through Passionate Housewives Desperate for God - excellent read so far (you can find it much cheaper on ebay or amazon)! I also finished Already Gone which was a definite eye-opener!!! Whoa! Hubby is now working his way through it. Ladies, if you want a truly great read, go get Intimate Issues. I bought mine for 25 cents (plus shipping) off of amazon after I heard a lady talking about it on her blog. Every Christian wife should read it. Wonderfully written!!!

Hubby and I will be celebrating our 12th anniversary the end of the month. The Lord has wonderfully blessed me with such an amazing mate and friend....but I'll save all that gushy stuff for the end of the month *grin*.

  1. Well Alissa..... after looking at the ads for the three books you have listed on your blog as good reading,I have to say something. In the book Already Gone,it doesn't say if the kids who have left church were saved or not!! If these kids didn't come to know Christ as their Saviour then yes I can maybe see them leaving. Perhaps they didn't have saved parent or added teaching and training in the home. But if they came to know Christ and had biblical training and teaching in the home, examples for them to live by,the outcome should be different.I could say more but I will leave it at that for now.

  2. How many children that I grew up along side of that attended church with me EVERY Sunday, who had Christian parents, are attending church and living for the Lord today. You and I both know of the countless number of people my age (and my siblings age) who saw nothing wrong with premarital s*x, gotten pregnant out of wedlock, who do not attend church now in their 20's and 30's, who have gotten divorces, on and on and on.....You really need to read the book to understand what he is saying. Our churches today are not teaching kids the foundation and apologetics of why we believe the Bible, they are being fed Bible 'stories' but are attending school were they are fed 'facts' which are being 'proven' but yet contradict scripture. Confusions arises in their minds because they don't know how to respond and defend their beliefs...they are just told to believe the Bible because it is God's word and it is true.....but they are not being taught the science behind it to prove their faith. Can you prove that this world is 6000 years old to someone? They have bunches of ways to prove to you that the world is millions of years old...so how do you show them through science that it is only 6000 years? That is only ONE example.....our Sunday School/children's ministry needs to be revamped to train our children how to defend their faith and the foundation for this is Genesis 1-11. THAT is what is needed instead of just Bible stories!
If you get the chance you should definitely read it. Thanks for responding.....I love you!

  3. Hi Alissa
I think the point that is missing here is the teaching in the HOME. A lot of kids you went to church with, well their parents are even split up.WE do not leave it up to the church to ground our children in the Lord. Most of the churches today are not worth a penny. One of the reasons you are home schooling is that the system has failed and so is the church in supplementing the home. We are living in the end times and need to read our Bible more than books about the bible(no intent meant here). Search the scripture and compare what is being said in the book. The responsibility is in the HOME not the church so to me it does not matter what they say. We know the church is on the way out, it is just a social club ,if you have a good pastor support him in every way and pray that satin cannot touch him and families trying to live for the Lord.

  4. Yes, the teaching definitely does need to be in the home! But so many parents, who are true believers themselves find it difficult to back up scripture and defend their faith through science. We grow up learning Bible stories and we "believe it because it's in the Bible". Children are asking their parents questions about 'how DID Noah fit all the animals on the ark?'....how long DID dinosaurs live for and did they live with people?"..etc and alot of our parents responses are "well I'm not sure, BUT it's in the Bible so we believe it!" That is not a proper response! We need to be giving our children (and parents too!) the needs to defend their faith. 90% of children are learning their science facts in school which is filled with the world's point of view. Our Christian kids are receiving biblical 'moral' training at home, but they are not being given scientific fact and a firm foundation of apologetics at home. Kids and parents know what the Bible says, but don't know how to defend it. How many parent's do you know that study the science behind the scripture and teach their kids that at home?
And yes....we do need to get into the Word of God more! So many Christians know WHAT they believe because that is what they were taught growing up, but you ask them to show you in the Bible and they don't know where to go. You have to search the scripture yourself to find out what you believe (and be prepared to get flack from other believers if your view point may change on some things!)
    I love you!

  5. The father is the head of the home and is the one that must train the entire family in the teachings of scripture. Dad, I couldn't agree with you more. When I first looked at this book I thought the same thing as Mom. When you read it it makes a lot more sense. All it is basically saying is that all Christians young and old need to defend their faith in todays generation. The foundation is Genesis. Everything must be built on top of this. Again this must start at the home. Church should only reenforcement this point just as Dad is pointing out.

  6. This is my last point. If we need science to back up scripture we have already lost the battle. It is good to know as much as possible
and teach your children in the proper way but I would never defend my faith through science because there are so many things in scripture that science has not caught up with yet. As far as school is concerned a lot of things that they learn in school is NOT FACT you can call it what you like but it is not true, that's what we need to teach our children .AS far as the dinosaurs question is concerned I would like to know the answer. There is evidence that they existed and God made them. one reference in the bible even Christians cannot agree on where they talk about the dinosaur and say it is a hippo. I have never seen a hippo with a tail as long as the trees of Lebanon. Educate yourself try and give good answers, but you will not have all the answers and people will always disagree on somethings. If it is in the bible you may not have all the answers yet .My motto.I may not be able to defend it but God wrote it so that is good for me.

  7. I agree that the husband/father is the head of the home. He is the one God put in place to teach his family about the things of the Lord. It is a grave responsibility. So the husband/father must make sure what he is teaching his family is Gods' Word and the correct interpretation of scripture,as to not lead his family astray. Scripture interprets scripture.
